David Graddol is a British applied linguist, well-known as a writer,
broadcaster, researcher and consultant on issues relating to global
English. After working for almost 25 years for the UK Open University, he
is now the Managing Director of The English Company (UK) Ltd, a
consultancy and publishing company, and is Managing Editor of linguistics
books and journals for Equinox Publishing. David is a member of the
editorial boards of several academic journals, including Language
Problems and Language Planning and Visual Communication.

David Graddol has published widely on matters related to the English
language. He researched and wrote The Future of English? for the British
Council in 1997. Published in British, Chinese and Japanese editions,
this report helped establish a new agenda and framework for understanding
the international development of English. David recently wrote a follow-up
analysis of global trends in English language learning - English Next -
which was published by the British Council in February 2006.
