RELIGIONS, REGIONALISM and GLOBALIZATION in ASIA

With the support of the Japan Foundation Manila and the Ateneo Japanese Studies Program

Religion is a pervasive presence in Asia. Asia is the birthplace of religions --- Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Taoism, and others--and a site of religious tensions. Asia is also today the stage where efforts towards regional integration are happening. Asia is experiencing the impact of globalization. Is the multiplicity o freligions a hindrance to regional integration? Have the secularizing features of globalization diminished the role of religion in the economy, politics and societies of Asia? What are the positive and negative impacts of religion on development? Are religions in Asia objects or agents of globalization?
