Working underground in the country of standing men

The Ateneo de Manila University Press, in cooperation with SM North EDSA, will launch two books about the lives of Filipino workers in Japan, both by journalist and documentary filmmaker Rey Ventura: "Underground in Japan," and "Into the Country of Standing Men." The launch will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2007, at the Atrium, 2nd Level of The Block, SM North Edsa, from 4 to 6 pm, with the support of Figaro Coffee Company.

Both books look closely at the daily lives of men and women working away from home, and chronicle their struggle toward what they hope would be a better life for themselves and their families. Through anecdotes, reflective insights, his characteristic honesty and a unique sense of humor, the author captures the complexities of such a life.

Black and white photos as well as video footages will be shown during the program as part of a public awareness campaign regarding migration.
