Updates from GK National:

Kalinga Luzon : Bicol ExpressGawad Kalinga responds with winds of restorationJoin GK in rebuilding Bicol this December
Super typhoon Reming has left the country, and other news are starting to slowly overshadow the devastation and the urgent and great need of the families in the thirteen provinces (based on NDCC Report, December 4) where Reming unleashed its fury. Of these 13 provinces, Gawad Kalinga is focusing its initial efforts on Marinduque, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon.
Relief Efforts
1. Gawad Kalinga has joined forces with Ateneo De Manila University and ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya Foundation for the warehousing, sorting and distribution of relief goods for families.
2. Priority needs are :
a. CASH donations
b. Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) – drinking water, water purifiers, purifying tablets and water containers
c. Health – medicines, medical teams
d. Food – canned goods, rice
e. Non-food items – candles, clothing, blankets, gasoline for delivery vehicles (we have tapped volunteers to lend us their trucks but we need gasoline supply), generators (we need them during the build activities, construction, etc.)
f. Construction materials – GI sheets, c-purlins
3. GK Partners who would like to donate goods can course it through ABS-CBN (13 Examiner Street, South Triangle, QC. Tel. No. 4110846) or through Ateneo De Manila University (Cervini Hall, ADMU Campus, Katipunan). Please indicate your company/group name and that you are a GK Partner.
4. ABS-CBN, ADMU and GK will jointly agree on specific communities that it will support for relief goods. GK warehouses are now set up in Naga City and Daraga, Albay to receive these donations. GK communities in the region, many of which are isolated barangays, will also serve as base for distribution efforts. GK Priority will be these communities as well as nearby barangays.
5. GK is also accepting cash donations through the following bank accounts :
PESO : BPI Greenhills Branch CA#3101-0976- 75Please fax deposit slip to 723-1603 or email http://us.f520.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=dvmangona@gawadkalinga.org%20and%20gk.liquidation@gmail.com for proper acknowledgment of your donation.

Repair Efforts
1. The GK - Kalinga Luzon campaign has already built the following :
a. 15 communities in Camarines Sur : Total of 1055 homes
b. 9 communities in Camarines Norte : Total of 371 homes
c. 5 communities in Albay : Total of 77 homes
d. 1 community in Sorsogon (Castilla) : Number to be confirmed
e. 2 communities in Marinduque : 22 homes
2. Of these communities, an estimated 80-90% lost their roofing. The report of the initial investigation team of GK showed that many of the GI sheets were torn from their rivets. Those whose roofs were not torn off caused the house to "implode," with the walls collapsing with the pressure (255 kph of sustained winds). Super typhoon Reming swept through Albay and left almost none of the structures standing because of its strength. Since there is no power, and communication is still difficult, we will just send a follow up comprehensive report.
3. GK is now campaigning for partners to support our efforts by allocating resources to repair these homes. Since the structures are already standing, it will cost much less to just repair the roofing and provide a home for the families this Christmas.
Rehabilitation Plan
1. GK is also finalizing its rehabilitation plan for the immediate relocation of families into new GK communities. We have a golden opportunity now because our first Kalinga Luzon campaign in 2004 allowed us to secure land, build relationships with Local Government Units and train our caretaker teams for the work. We are certainly more prepared to embark on this massive work.
2. GK is also mobilizing two big KALINGA LUZON Build activities : December 13-15 and another one on December 20-22. These will involve GK volunteers from Metro Manila and nearby provinces, GK residents from the various GK sites, students and corporate employees who are willing to spend their Christmas with the victims.

Ka-SOC SCI-yan! SOSS Week 2006: SOSSiety Page

We are inviting all students, organizations, barkadas, blocks, faculty and staff to send in photos from the past and present of themselves, of their relatives, friends and families. These photos from different periods in their history will be arranged in to a large photo mosaic that will be placed in the SOSS Week 2006 exhibit. This photo mosaic will serve as our appreciation for history and how we as a community learn from the past to become better people.

Below are the mechanics for the submission of pictures.

Mechanics:

1. Photos must be submitted in DIGITAL format, SCANNED or from a digital camera. Please refrain from submitting prints. This is so because prints may be difficult to return to the owners after use and the organizers do not want to be responsible for them, and also to facilitate the layouting of the final poster.

2. Submissions must be at most 200 kb each and should be in standard size (4x6, 5x7,etc.). They may be submitted through CDs or DVDs and can be placed in the designated box in the Sanggu room at the MVP, or they can be emailed to sossiety@yahoo.com. USB thumb drive submissions are discouraged because of the proliferation of viruses.

3. Only PERSONAL photos may be submitted. No copyrighted photos (including those from books) may be submitted without prior permission.

4. Photos may be manipulated as necessary.

5. The following are not allowed to be displayed on submitted photos: nudity, anti-ateneo, anti-christianity, illegal drugs, excessive violence, smoking and drinking.

6. Not all photos are guaranteed inclusion in the final poster but as much as possible the organizers will try to do so.

7. Last day for submission is on Friday, January 19, 2007.

So start rummaging through your cabinets and drawers for pictures of lola and lolo, old baby pictures, photos of family vacations and holidays or tap your documentation and publication heads to collect photos of your organization's events through the years or even of significant projects this year and dont forget to take a look at your personal accounts online for pictures of your block's road trips and your barkada's reunions. Send in your pictures NOW and Be the HISTORY!

AJMA Made It Happen Again with AIMS 2006

The Ateneo Junior Marketing Association annually holds the Ateneo Intercollegiate Marketing Seminar. It is one of the two flagship events of the organization and is perhaps the most prestigious of its kind. More popularly known as AIMS, the event gathers the 50 best junior and senior student-marketers from the country’s premier universities namely: the Ateneo, De La Salle, UA&P, UP Diliman and UST. Aspiring participants undergo a rigorous screening process that involves an actual interview with Human Resources officers before they qualify for the final cut off. Top caliber marketing practitioners from partner sponsors are invited to impart with the participants the very fundamentals of marketing. Later on, delegates enter the revalida competition wherein they present and defend their marketing strategies to a set of competent panelists while Human Resources officers keep a watchful eye on the most promising students. This opens the gates to vibrant careers in marketing or sales. Delegates ultimately gain invaluable insights and meet friends while enjoying the lavish accommodations of a five-star hotel. All these take place in the 3-day affair at absolutely no cost.

For this year, AIMS set eye on a more ambitious endeavor. With the theme Brand Management: Key in today’s highly diversified markets, the AIMS team focused on a more comprehensive, interactive and informative seminar which promised to surpass its predecessors. The event was made possible through the generous support from Unilever Philippines, San Miguel Corporation, L’Oreal Philippines, Smart Telecommunications and Jollibee Foods Corporation. Of the 182 applicants, only the 50 crème de la crème slipped through the demanding screening process - 28 came from Ateneo, 14 from UP Diliman, 6 from De La Salle while UST and UA&P had one representative each. The 8 teams received their respective marketing cases courtesy of San Miguel, L’Oreal and Smart one week prior to the event to give ample time for review.

On day one, students were welcomed to a warm reception at the Asian Institute of Management. Superb speakers from Unilever headed by Mr. Dondi Gomez instantly wowed the avid novices. Their talks primarily centered on building iconic brands – from the bold conception, to the effective communication and down to the creative execution. Ms. Pop Vargas of San Miguel on the one hand explored the prospects of local brands entering the global arena. And lastly, socialites Tessa Dragon and Tina Tinio of L’Oreal–Shu Uemura concluded the day’s seminar with a sensational talk on Events Management. The participants were then treated to a smorgasbord of Filipino cuisines at Cabalen Glorietta. The casual dinner also introduced the teams to their corporate mentors who shared crucial points on how to best go about their marketing strategies. The night was capped off by the plush arrangements at the Oakwood Premier Suites.

The following day was even more exciting as teams geared towards the much-anticipated revalida competition. The panelists were composed of distinguished individuals from the academe and the corporate world. They were Mr. Armando Miclat of the Ateneo SOM- Business Accelerator program, Ms. Junadette Avedillo, General Manager of San Miguel Mills Inc., Mr. Joaquin Esquivias, co-owner of Azta Salon and finally Mr. Mias Posadas Assistant Brand Manager of Unilever Philippines. Every second seemed infinite as teams were humbled down by the judges’ constructive remarks. Finally after eight grueling hours, one team was pronounced as champion. SMC B’s Noodelight emerged victors in this year’s display of marketing acumen. Equally pleased was Katy Abello (UP) of Redken who garnered the crowd’s respect as she earned the title Best Speaker. Although mentally drained and physically exhausted, everyone was nevertheless delighted by the learning experience.

This year’s AIMS indeed proved to be a huge success. Despite the frequent difficulties encountered, the team nonetheless remained steadfast to their promise. The men and women behind this ambitious project put their hearts out and never settled for the ordinary. Because in AJMA… we simply make BETTER things happen.

Beyond the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment): The role of environment in understanding business risks

Undertaking environmental assessments is often seen as a cost of doing business. However, it is in fact the opposite-- while being a cost, a lot of companies nowadays see the benefits and returns of understanding environmental conditions in a financial/transacti onal project. Knowing the environmental risks before financial transactions are finalised is important in understanding material issues that could lead to increased costs, litigation and added responsibility. Every sound businessman will want to know the risks involved, and too often environmental risks are underestimated.

Mr Duckworth and Ms Janice Lao from ERM- Hong Kong will discuss the business drivers on undertaking environmental studies in financial/transacti onal projects (eg Mergers and Acquisitions, Project Finance, Initial Public Offering). They will draw from their experience working in Southeast Asia and China.

Environmental Resources Management (ERM) is an international consulting group of 3,000 environmental, health, safety, social (EHSS) and risk management specialists. As EHSS issues become more important for corporations and governments, ERM is working to balance environmental protection with economic development, improved health and safety and social equity.

ASCC is an arm of the Sanggunian¢s Committee on Student Rights and Welfare (STRAW). We assist and help students process their concerns and complaints related to (but not limited to) Magna Carta violations stated in the LS Student Handbook. As we process these concerns, we keep the complainant¢s identity confidential.

Volunteers are expected to be in our office desk at MVP 200 three hours every week, with schedules just like a 3-unit subject.
Interested applicants can contact Peter Imbong at 0915 851 0286

AteneoLAC's Ojo de Dios Lantern-Making Competition

Greetings!
In line with the approaching yuletide this year, the Ateneo Lingua Ars Cultura has come up with Pasko sa Ojo de Dios (Christmas in the Eye of God) Lantern Making Competition that will run on the week of December 18, 2006. We gladly invite you to join us in pursuing this project.

Two objectives drive us to accomplish this project:

1. To enrich cultural awareness and appreciate cultural ties in Ateneans through an incorporation of the Filipino tradition of Christmas lanterns and the Mexican craft of Ojo de Dios.
2. To ignite the Christmas Spirit in selected residential institutions by decorating their buildings with our Ojo de Dios Lanterns.

Pasko sa Ojo de Dios will feature a fusion of two colorful traditions namely the Philippine Christmas lantern and the Ojo de Dios craft of Mexico integrated to the Holiday Season. Furthermore, the Philippine Christmas lantern, as we all know, is traditionally made up of star-figured sticks, colored papers and light bulbs. Through this project, we attempt to give a little twist to our Christmas lanterns using the Ojo de Dios craft which traditionally uses a very simplistic set of materials—yarn and sticks. To detail on Ojo de Dios, here is a brief background derived from Marian Harvey’s book, Crafts of Mexico:

The God's Eyes come from the Huichol tribe which lives in the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. The God's Eyes are also called by the Spanish term "ojo de dios". The ojo de dios is meant to be a "wand" (the eye) through which the eye of god will see the supplicant (asking for health and long life for children).

Participants in the contest shall be applying the said fusion of traditions. The finished entries after the said competition will be donated to selected residential social institutions currently served by your organization. These will be for decoration purposes.

Mechanics of the contest, a brief orientation, and the distribution of basic materials shall be explained during the first day of the competition week. We encourage you to join as a group. Also, prizes will be given to the team of contestants with the most creative lantern during the culminating event to be held on December 21, 2006.

Please send us your confirmation with regard to the competition on or before December 11, 2006. We are looking forward to your full cooperation in making this project a worthwhile experience.

Thank you,

Sanggunian Updates

Committee on Student Activities

ASLA and Sanggu Relations

In our efforts to improve the Sanggunian¢s relationship with the Ateneo Student Leaders Assembly, the currently amendments to the resolution are being evaluated. A meeting was convened last November 13, 2006 in the CSPPA office with the ASLA core and the CSA to evaluate the effectivity to of having Sanggu participation in the applicant deliberations, curriculum setting, implementation and evaluation of the program. Although this year was an improvement from how the two parties dealt with each other in the past years, it was seen that ASLA has gained some independence from the Sanggunian. Because of this, both parties agreed that ASLA may function better if they will be no longer be put under the wing of the Sanggunian as this will allow them to broaden the scope of the program. Although there have been no final decisions made yet, the possibility of finding a better set-up is in the works. Another meeting is set on November 16, 2006 to discuss the issue further.

ACP

ACP was cancelled this year due to situational constraints (no evaluation and no team for this year). The project was then put under the responsibility of the committee. The committee is still looking for more volunteers to evaluate the project and set up a new team for next year. The committee has already decided not to come up with an alternative project for ACP this year due to time constraints. Documents from the past ACP cannot be found therefore the evaluation process is put on hold. The committee deputy, Uana Arellano, contacted Celine Sugay, the documentations and publications head of last year¢s ACP. Ms. Sugay said that she has the bible and necessary materials for the project to be evaluated. However, two weeks ago, she said that it was not with her. Ms. Arellano also has been trying to set up a meeting with Grip Bueta, head of ACP in the years 2004 and 2005, to help in the evaluation but his schedule does not permit so. The evaluation has to be done as soon as possible so that a new system for ACP may be put on paper and preparations for next year can be started. The committee will be sending out a message through the AOB Bulletin meant for those who were part of past ACPs to assist in the evaluation and provide input on how the system can be improved.

What's new with the Ateneo Online Bulletin (AOB)?

After evaluating the AOB system that has been used for the past semester, here are some changes we are going to implement this time around in order to improve upon it.

1. Some promotions sent by student orgs are sometimes not included in the weekly announcements.
Þ Orgs now send their promotions/announcement to coa_board@yahoo.com instead of sanggu_board@yahoo.com so that their promotions can be easily organized.
Þ Orgs are now sent an email confirming the receipt of their promotions so that they know if their promotions have been successfully received by the AOB Team.

2. Some student orgs do not know how to send promotions through the AOB.
Þ The AOB Team shall provide soft and hard copies of how to send promotions to all student groups.
Þ In case groups still do not use the prescribed format in emailing the AOB, a reply containing how to send promotions shall always be sent in soft copy to the groups.

3. The banner and pictures of AOB do not appear.
Þ The template pictures are currently being updated in order to avoid this forever.

4. Some announcements are often repeated.
Þ From now on, the AOB Team shall not anymore repeat its announcements for consecutive weeks.

5. Batch emergency announcements aren't included on time to help the students in the AOB.
Þ From now on, the different Batch Chairpersons of the Sanggunian can now access the AOB to send emergency announcements that need to be announced before the weekly updates.

6. There are very few important announcements and so many ads.
Þ From now on, the AOB shall be sent to the administrators and faculty of the school so that they can become more aware that they can use it for their administration announcements.
Þ The AOB Team shall now actively seek out important announcements not sent to the Sanggunian so that it can include all announcements – from no class announcements to lab breakage fees collection dates, etc. etc.

L’oréal e-Strat Challenge

L’Oréal Philippines invites you to participate in the L’Oréal e-Strat Challenge, the biggest global online business and strategy competition for business students.
To join, form a team composed of three members and log on to www.e-strat. loreal.com to register and start playing the game. Registration is until 28 November 2006.
L’Oréal e-Strat Challenge is the ultimate business game that provides the participants with the opportunity to be in the virtual driver’s seat of a leading global cosmetics company, and to make strategic decisions based on realistic marketing situations. The students will need to consider business realities such as development strategy, finance, marketing, pricing policy, product issues, advertising, and brand positioning.
When playing, your team will compete with four virtual companies in making critical decisions and providing creative solutions to drive your company to the top. But in a broader sense, the L’oréal e-Strat Challenge allows you to compete with the best minds around the world. Last year, 40,000 students from 2,000 universities in 125 countries registered for the challenge. 5,000 students (1,500 teams) qualified for the competition proper, 300 teams were selected to the semifinals, and 16 teams made it to the international finals held in Paris, France where the participants presented their business plans before L’Oréal senior executives.
If your team makes it to the international finals, you and your partner professor will be sent to Paris, France courtesy of L’Oréal Philippines.
And if you win the finals, you and your partner professor will get the chance to go to any country of your choice… for free!
In the national competition, the top three teams from the Philippines and their partner professors will receive the following prizes:
1st Place: 3 Days and 2 Nights Trip to Boracay
2nd Place: Overnight Accommodation in a 5-Star Hotel
3rd Place: Formal Dining Certificates
Let us show the world that the Philippines is a force to reckon with. Join the e-Strat Challenge and make your school and country proud!

Report on Guimaras Assistance

Dear Friends and Supporters of Task Force Noah and the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan,

I am happy to report that through the funds collected by the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan and Ateneo de Manila University's Task Force Noah, the following forms of assistance have been provided to the communities in Guimaras that were most badly affected by the recent oil-spill.
· Relief Goods for 500 fisher-families (of Salvacion and Laniput Towns);
· Milk Supplement for 230 children (of various towns of Nueva Valencia);
· Seeds for Backyard Vegetable farming for 250 families (of Lucmayan Town);
· Start-up capital for a small-scale alternative livelihood/crafts-making project in Sitio Dungcaan, Lucmayan;
· Free Medical consultations for the members of communities in Dungcaan and Talabahan;
I, along with Dr. Atoy Salazar, S.J., M.D. and Dr. RV Guevara, M.D., comprised the SLB-team that facilitated the above last October 24-29, 2006. All our efforts were in cooperation with Mrs. Beth Jarantilla (Iloilo based SLB volunteer), Fr. Bong Gotera (Parish Priest of Nueva Valencia) and Sr.Louise Banares of the Dominican Sisters based in Guimaras.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL WHO GAVE GENEROUSLY to make these forms of assistance possible. A detailed accounting of the said funds and expenses will be sent to all donors shortly. This will also be posted in our website, www.slb.ph, along with photos taken in the spill-site and a more detailed report on the conditions found there.

May the Spirit of concern and generosity, and a deepening sense of stewardship for all creation, continue to lead us closer to our God who is with us in our work for those in great need.

In Christ Our Lord,

Mark Lopez, S.J

Enercon Tips

All Ateneo de Manila Administrators, Faculty, Professionals and Staff as
well as Students can help the energy conservation effort by:

Computers:
Screen savers do not save energy but giving your computer a nap does.

AEnable power management features so your computer monitor and hard drive
will go into a low power (blank screen) "sleep mode" when not actively in use.

Keep all computer equipment turned off unless in use -- especially at
night and on weekends.

Turn off your monitor when you go to lunch, to a meeting or when you
will be away from your workstation for an hour or more.

Turn off monitors on servers.
Enable power management features on printers or turn off printers when
not actively printing.

When purchasing computers and peripherals, buy low-wattage equipment
and be sure to enable power management features when setting up equipment. Buy
according to your need. Big screens use more energy than smaller ones.

Special note to computer lab operators: At the very minimum, power
management features should be enabled on all monitors in computer labs.
Sleeping monitors save energy as well as screens and will keep your lab
cooler. Also, when lab use is low (e.g. late hours, during breaks, or summer
semesters), it may be possible to provide full service to your users while
keeping the power turned off for some or many of the computers and monitors in
your lab. Experiment to see what is the minimum number of operating computers
actually needed.

Lights:
Turn off unused or unneeded lights.
Use natural lighting instead of electric lighting whenever possible.
Try task lighting and reduce overhead lighting.
If you have a desk lamp, make sure it uses a fluorescent bulb.
Don't use table lamps unless illumination from the lamps is actually
needed.
Do not use halogen floor lamps in any campus building. These lamps are
waste energy and may pose a safety risk.

Cooling:
Dress appropriate to the weather and keep thermostats to achieve
23degrees centigrade for air-conditioned areas.

Close blinds, drapes and curtains to block direct sunlight. Direct
sunlight heats up the room and causes the air-conditioners to work double-time.

Use hot water sparingly.

Windows and Doors:
Keep windows and doors closed in air-conditioned areas.
Close vestibule doors when propped open.

Other Equipment:
Purchase only energy-efficient models.
Turn off all energy consuming office and research equipment when not in
use, e.g., monitors, UPS's, AVR's, printers, photocopiers, scanners, electric
fans, microwave ovens with clock/timer, strip switches, and other equipment
with pilot lights.
Unplug all equipment on weekends.
Maintain a cleaning schedule for air-conditioners. Ensure that filters
are always clean and not clogged with dust.
Defrost refrigerators regularly. Do not let ice build up in and around
freezer area.

Report Energy Waste:
Please help us by reporting instances of energy waste to the University
Physical Plant c/o Nhoy Almosera at local 4104.
Complain about energy waste or suggest energy savings measures/projects
by contacting Tomas L. Testa IV, at local 4138.

Thank you for your cooperation.
