HOST A CLASS

Yes! Hosting a class during Blue Christmas is now open to all blocks and barkadas!

It is your group's opportunity to bond while reaching out to our less-privileged children in this season of giving and receiving!

Just imagine how one child will treasure one Christmas moment with you.

Make your Christmas more meaningful!
Host a class.
Blue Christmas.

---------------------------------------

Frequently Asked Questions

For different organizations, blocks and groups

1. What is Blue Christmas?

Blue Christmas is an annual whole-day Christmas celebration that benefits our less fortunate children, ages 5 to 15, from various areas of the Socially-Oriented Organizations of the Ateneo (SOA) and the Jesuit apostolate communities. It is a campus-wide project under the Council of Organizations of the Ateneo (COA), in cooperation with the Office of Planning and Development and Alumni Affairs (PDAAO).

Salu-salo sa Belen is the theme of this year’s Blue Christmas which hopes to bring back the simple yet meaningful and truest meaning of Christ’s coming to our lives.

Blue Christmas will be held on December 2, 2006, the last Saturday before December.

2. What happens during the day of Blue Christmas?

In the morning, kids will be divided into groups where various classes will be held hosted by different groups and organizations in the Ateneo community, touching on arts and crafts, sports and others.

In the afternoon, the kids will be handed over to the PDAAO for their afternoon program and variety show to be held now in the Erinchun field. Throughout the day, the kids will be accompanied by volunteer facilitators who will lead the activities and ensure the well-being of the kids throughout the day.

3. What is new about Blue Christmas?

Aside from different student organizations of the Loyola Schools, Blue Christmas is now opening the invitation to all groups of students who are willing to host and handle a particular class. Your block, your barkada, your dormmates, or even your Ateneo high school organization can now be part of the first batch of non-organization class host volunteer.

Blue Christmas is trying to expand its reach to the whole community of the Ateneo.

4. As a class host volunteer, what do we get to experience?

More than anything else, it is the experience of being with others especially with the less-fortunate children who long for a happy and unforgettable Christmas celebration that matters most. Just imagine how one child will treasure one Christmas moment with you.

The true meaning of Christmas does not lie on gifts but on the value of giving and receiving. Sharing your time and being with others who you rarely meet are more than enough gifts that Blue Christmas can offer you.

Just as a souvenir of your participation, class host volunteers now get to acquire exclusive Blue Christmas shirts, which were limited before to volunteer facilitators. Hosting organizations and groups are also included in a memorabilia bulletin after the Blue Christmas event.

5. Who are qualified to host a class?

A minimum of five people coming from accredited organizations, unaccredited organizations, publication organizations, high school organizations, college blocks, barkadas, and other groups of students are qualified to host a class.

6. Is there a time limit for holding a class?

Classes will start from 9am to 11am. Each class host is given 1 hour to 1 ½ hour to hold and handle a class in the morning.

7. How many students are there in a class?

An average of 20 students per class will be invited. All in all, there will be a total of 500 kids with 25 different class hosts on the day itself.

Who will reserve the venue for our class and who will provide the materials?

Blue Christmas will take care of the reservation of classrooms for your class. However, Blue Christmas will not shoulder the expenses of the materials or props used in your class activities. This is part of your volunteer work as class hosts of Blue Christmas

8. We are willing to host a class, what should we do?

1. Apply for a class slot by accomplishing the class hosting form and submit it on or before August 31, 2006 (Thursday). If you are a block or group of friends, you may sign-up at the promoboard from August 21-31. Submit all class hosting forms at the Blue Christmas drop box located near the COA pigeon hole, in front of the Office of Student Activities, MVP.
2. Prepare for a mock class presentation to be scheduled on September 1-14, 2006.
3. Wait for the approval from Blue Christmas 2006. All class proposals will be screened. Final list of approved classes will be announced on September 15, 2006.

9. Where can we get a copy of the class hosting form?

You can download the class hosting form at http://geocities.com/bluexmas06/form.doc. A hard copy of the form is also attached to the letter or invitation your group or org has received.

10. How many classes will be accepted and how will they be screened?

Class proposals will be deliberated according to the creativity of the class program, appropriateness of the medium used, relation of the activity to Blue Christmas theme, and the lessons that the children will learn. The top 25 classes will be chosen and accepted to participate.

11. Can we submit and hold more than 1 class proposal?

Yes, you may but it is most likely that only one will be accepted per org or group after screening and selection to give way for other group or org.

For more questions and inquiries, you may email bxmas06@yahoogroups.com, or contact our respective program liaisons.

Sanggu says NO to this initiative!

Changing our Constitution requires all of our active participation. It should not be done by a select few nor for a select few and certainly never in haste. The problem is that a majority of us Filipinos are again put in the sidelines, at worst fooled to believe in quick fix solutions, all labeled as the People's Initiative.

We, the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola ng Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila, stand to stop the current People's Initiative to change our Constitution.

First, this People's Initiative faces many legal obstacles that its proponents never fully address. According to the Supreme Court, no enabling law for such a process exits. Moreover, even if such a law exists, such a major overhaul of our government's structure constitutes a revision, not a mere amendment. The 1987 Constitution only allows any People's Initiative to amend and not revise. Shifting from a presidential-bicameral system to a parliamentary-unicameral system or changes to Sections 1-7 of Article VI; Sections 1-4 of Article VII; and introducing a new Article XVIII is certainly no minor feat.

Second, numerous instances have been cited of Filipinos deceiving fellow Filipinos just to gather signatures or support for this initiative. In discussions at many areas, many Filipinos are made to believe that changing our Constitution would lead to more jobs, more food in the table, a better economy or to political stability. Sadly however, there is no conclusive evidence that a certain political structure is necessary to address poverty, unemployment or any other pressing issue today. Investors do not even cite a particular political structure to make a certain area more attractive.

Third, Article XVIII entitled Transitory Provisions in the petition contain clauses that give the Interim Parliament and the incumbent President more power than necessary. These provisions authorize the Interim Parliament "to propose amendments to, or of revisions of, this Constitution" (Art. XVIII, Sec. 4.4). This makes the process easier for those in power to change further our Constitution, the very process we are safeguarding now. It also authorizes the Interim Prime Minister "to perform such powers and responsibilities as may delegated to him by the incumbent President" (Art. SVIII, Sec. 5.1). Even if the Interim Prime Minister has executive powers too, this statement clearly illustrates who is superior.

We do recognize the need for constitutional reform but it should always be in a manner that includes all citizens and a more sober review. We cannot afford deceiving our fellow citizens anymore with quick fix solutions for most of us are already disenfranchised, tired and pissed of the burdens we carry despite so many revolutions, presidents, programs. The haste one observes today may also indicate a politics of survival or a notion that it would serve only a few personal or group interests. A bigger and more inclusive review of our constitution is necessary so that the final product would really be a social contract we all will uphold and follow. It should not be through a process that misleads and divides further our nation.

For these, we appeal to the petitioners of this People's Initiative to seriously reconsider.

"Nanotechnology and Commercialization of Intellectual Property"

By: Dr. Flordivino L. Basco

August 29, 2006, Tuesday; 4:30 p.m.
Department of Chemistry, Schmitt Hall Ch 109

Nanotechnology is fueling the current wave of technologies. More is
expected of nanotechnology (more precisely referred to as "nanoscale
technologies") as it will enable the world to both arrive at new and
radical creations and change old ones in ways that are unpredictable and
unanticipated. This talk will present an overview of this engaging and
disrupting technology, and emphasize the development of new materials.
The advent of the new market order drives organizations to innovate,
create and exploit intellectual property (IP) as a novel economic asset
built on knowledge capital. Building a strong portfolio of intellectual
assets will better position organizations, and even nations, to achieve
market dominance and secure financial stability. Strategies, tools and
techniques will be discussed on how to optimally exploit IP in order to
generate revenues and build value for the organization concerned.

About the Speaker
Dr. Flordivino Basco holds a DSc in Physics, major in Solid State
Physics & Materials Science from the University of Tokyo (1994-1997),
and M.S. Physics (most outstanding MS Graduate, 1990-1992) and BS
Physics, (cum laude, 1987-1990) both from the College of Science, UP
Diliman.
Dr. Basco is currently a Patent Executive Assistant at the Sapalo,
Velez, Bundang & Bulilan Law Offices, Makati. He reviews patents on
semiconductors, materials science, numerical analysis & programming, and
software development, and assists inventor draft their patent
applications.

Books on Migration, Globalization at the Manila International Bookfair

The Ateneo de Manila University Press presents books with new and nuanced perspectives about the myriad aspects of migration and globalization, at the Manila International Bookfair, August 30 to September 3, at the World Trade Center, Roxas Blvd., Pasay City. Bookfair hours are 10 am to 8 pm.

Negotiating Globalization in Asia
by the Ateneo Center for Asian Studies is a collection of conference papers which show that although globalization influences and impacts on identities and perspectives, it is local realities that ultimately determine the local features of this globalized world.

Satanic Mills or Silicon Islands?,
a book on the politics of high-tech production in the Philippines by Stephen McKay, challenges the myth of globalization's homogenizing power, looks at the rise of privatized export processing zones, shows the Philippine state's revamped role in the wider politics of global production, and gives voice to women workers on and beyond the new shop floor.

Underground in Japan
by Rey Ventura zeroes in on Filipino day laborers in a Japanese suburb called Kotobuki. They are called Standing Mence because every day they have to stand in line as they wait to be chosen to work in a construction site or shipyard or wherever there is work to be done. Amidst the humiliation and risks and dangers they face every day, it is possible for them to consider Kotobuki as paradise.

Children of Global Migration
by Rhacel Parrenas looks at how migrant work has both challenged and reinforced traditional roles of men and women; how children of OFW parents are coping with emotional difficulties and why it is important to have greater community responsibility in their care; and how institutions, agencies and individuals need to change their perspective of gender roles as more and more transnational families are created by the new global order.

Global Divas
by Martin F. Manalansan IV is a vivid ethnography of the global and transnational dimensions of gay identity as lived by Filipino immigrants in New York City. The study shows how the experiences of diasporic gay Filipinos help make us understand larger issues attending globalization, export of Filipino labor, and formation of subcultures within the diaspora.

Finally, Deglobalization by Walden Bello points to the manifest failings of the intenational bodies that have promoted the prevailing economic globalization, and argues for a much more fundamental shift toward a decentralized, pluralistic system of global economic governance allowing countries to follow development strategies sensitive to their own values and particular mix of constraints and opportunities.

Thank you and we hope to see you at the bookfair.

Special Topics in History Lecture Series

The Last Conquest:
The Battles of the Spanish Conquest of the
Philippine Islands in the 16th Century

by
Mr. Jose Amiel P. Angeles
Instructor, Department of History

The Spanish conquest of the Philippines is a neglected event, with most
interpretations being dated, cursory, or colored by ideological biases.
This lecture seeks to make up for this gap by showing the interactions of
the Spanish and Filipino paradigms of warfare -- what John Lynn called a
people's discourse on warfare. This discourse is a product of a people's
history, geography and culture, and it affects such factors as how and
why a people wage war. It is through this examination of the Spanish and
Filipino discourses on war that the events of the Spanish conquest may be
put into their proper context, and perhaps this may clarify the actions
and motivations of the people involved.

Savage Representations in the Academy:
Liberal Ideology and the Impossibility of Nativist Longing

1 September 2006
Friday, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Science Education Complex Lecture Hall #3
Ateneo de Manila University

ABSTRACT:
This paper takes off from the insight of Native American historian,
Richard Morris, in his article "Educating Savages," that assimilation can
so effectively conform its indigenous subjects to dominant paradigms that
the newly minted native subjectivities cannot help but be complicit with
the colonial impulse, even in the moment of learning the truth of one's
indigenous history. While such a realization may occasion curiosity and
even a sense of loss, longing (for that lost lifeway), says Morris, is
impossible. In probing the anatomy of this incapacity, the paper will
focus its examination on the way liberal educational processes
unwittingly undermine and ultimately decimate majority cultures in the
world (or the cultures of the Two-Thirds World) by means of the
development narrative embedded in the modern ideology of progress. As
counterpoint to this overwhelmingly potent academic mystification,
anthropological and environmental literature will be solicited to
construct a "return gaze of the primitive" on modernity's epistemic
violence and track a different possible future for a species now
ironically "developed" to the very edge of self-annihilation. "Longing"
for the deep past of the species still extant in the codes of
fast-disappearing hunter-gatherer practices will supply the deep memory
from which to interrogate the present radically and imagine the
species-being differently. (excerpts of a film will be screened)
