Gratia on d'Ice (formerly MidAutumn Gratia)

Despite being re-scheduled three times, Gratia on d'Ice (formerly MidAutumn Gratia) finally pushed through last December 15, 2006 (Friday) at the Gonzaga cafeteria. This school year, Ateneo Celadon combined two of its traditional projects, the faculty appreciation week and MidAutumn celebration, and threw in some twists to add to the already-exciting combination. The nomination and voting period for the students’ choice faculty awards started last September at the Doghouse. Although the tally board provided amusement as usual for both teachers and students, many were also delighted by the trading cards featuring faculty members that were being sold. One professor already suggested creating a calendar for next year!

Because of super-typhoon Milenyo, the event was postponed to the following semester. However, Malacañang declared that classes on December 1 would be suspended in lieu of the November 30 national holiday. It was not meant to be when classes still did not push through because of super-typhoon Reming.

Executive board members and project managers were already disheartened. Yet, by chance, they were able to speak with Loyola Schools Vice President Dr. Assunta Cuyegkeng, who agreed to consider holding the event on the same evening as the Faculty Lounge Party**. With the approval of the deans and Dr. Agustin Rodriguez, things were starting to look better.

What better way to say Thank You…

With a wary eye on the weather forecasts, Celadon welcomed December 15. Festivities started with a mass at the college chapel. The Celadon choir, headed by Rachelle Son, sang during the celebration, which was presided by Fr. Rene Javellana, S.J., director of the Fine Arts department – “finally,” he said. Finally, indeed.

Preparations were underway by 1pm. Students at the cafeteria were asked to bear with the inconvenience caused by the sudden rearrangement of tables and chairs. After a lot of moving around, everything was set and the registration volunteers were armed with pens and ready to greet everyone. The first 100 faculty members who signed in received souvenir pens from It’s Cool, one of the event’s sponsors. Other sponsors that made the project possible are Moldex, Teriyaki Boy, Azta, El Bonito’s, Hallmark, and Meg.

After the National Anthem and opening prayer led by the Celadon Choir, President Daphne Uy gave a short welcoming speech to start the evening, followed directly by a sumptuous buffet dinner. During which, the Celadon Choir returned with Christmas carols and University President Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, S.J. shared a few insights about teaching, which he picked up from the Christmas movie, The Nativity Story. Tanghalang Ateneo then gave a presentation, which set the mood for the awarding ceremony. Cheers and applause from the audience erupted as the winners went on stage to receive their medals. The following teachers won the Gratia Awards for SY2006-2007:

The Legend

Congratulations!

With that part of the night over, it was time to play the game! There were roughly 12 participants per table, including two facilitators. Each round allowed all players to throw six dice in the glass bowl. Their prize was determined by the combination that appeared. Most participants wanted to get the Chuck shoe key chains and Starbucks gift certificates. Naturally, everyone was trying to roll the first prize combination (P500 per table).

…than to Pay It Forward?

To conclude everything was a raffle. Peter Mancao won the iPod Shuffle from Ynzal Marketing while Aerecson Uy and Alexis Ventura were selected to choose the two socially-oriented organizations that would receive the “MidAutumn showcase.” A short presentation was shown describing each of the eight organizations that agreed to participate: ACIL, ACLC, AtSCA, Gabay, Kaingin, Kythe, Musmos, and Tugon. In the end, the beneficiaries named were Kythe and Musmos. Dr. Assunta Cuyegkeng then gave her closing remarks to cap the night off.
On the afternoon of January 13, Celadon and Kythe volunteers visited the children at the Philippine Orthopedic Center to bring the dice game to them for. Parents and kids alike were delighted and excited by the prizes – bracelets, stuffed toys, keychains and games, items chosen with the help of Kythers since they know most what the patients will enjoy. The experience and a brief but meaningful sharing by Kythe moderator Ms. Fatima “Girlie” Garcia certainly made an impact on the participants. Surely it will continue to impress upon them the importance of living life to the fullest through simple deeds and simple joys that go a long way.
On February 3, children of Musmos will be treated to a dice game too!
Through these activities and many others, Celadon hopes to realize its vision of creating a Chinese Filipino community geared towards nation-building. It might take a while but as the old saying goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

*Special thanks to Ms. Evelyn Quidlat and Ms. Marla Andrada
**Part of the funds saved through the semi-tie-up with the Office of the Vice President for Loyola Schools was donated to the victims of Typhoon Reming at Bicol. The total amounted to P250,000.

We need volunteers for SOSS Week's Batas Militar Lab

The SOSS week scheduled on February 6-9 (Tuesday-Friday) is fast approaching and as part of the activity, the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng Ateneo de Manila and the Reserve Officers Training Corps have organized a competitive event for the SOSS organizations entitled Batas Militar Project, which will be held on February 3, 2007 (Saturday).
We are looking for volunteers that would help us facilitate this said project. It will be fun, exciting, and we’ll not spoil you with the surprises until you’ve confirmed acceptance. Your role in this event though is one that will be most rewarding and fun as well. This momentous event is a rarity in the Ateneo as this new flavor of competition has NEVER been attempted in our school. We invite you to partner with us and join us in this groundbreaking historic event. If you accept becoming a facilitator in the Batas Militar Project, please contact the numbers or e-mail addresses listed below as soon as possible; leave your name, year and course, and your contact numbers.
