"ART & SOCIETY" BRINGS TOGETHER FOUNDING PATRONS OF THE ATENEO ART GALLERY SOCIETY AND PAST ATENEO ART AWARDS ARTISTS

Art & Society, a project presented by the Ateneo Art Gallery, Metro
Society, Fiamma Enotica Smart Gold, Power Plant Mall, and Shu Uemura, is
a one-night exhibition of artworks of past short-listed and winning
artists of the Ateneo Art Awards. Several of the pieces, selected by the
Founding Patrons of the Ateneo Art Gallery Society, a collective of
civic-minded individuals whose activities support modern and contemporary
Philippine visual art through the Ateneo Art Gallery, are available for
purchase with a portion of the proceeds of sold works going to the
upcoming 2007 Ateneo Art Awards. The fundraising initiative will be
hosted by Fiamma Enotica on Jupiter Street, Makati City on 25 May 2007.

For the project, the Founding Patrons of the Ateneo Art Gallery Society
were paired with selected past short-listed and winning artists of the
Ateneo Art Awards with patrons visiting the artists' studios and engaging
them in discussions on their work before choosing the final artworks for
exhibition. Comprising the pairings of artists and patrons are Poklong
Anading (Short-listed 2004, Winner 2006) with Patrick Reyno; Marina Cruz
(Short-listed 2006) with Astrud Crisologo; Mideo Cruz (Winner 2006) with
Norman Crisologo; Norman Dreo (Short-listed 2005) with Kim and Felicia
Atienza; Geraldine Javier (Winner 2004) with Miguel Rosales; Isa Lorenzo
(Short-listed 2005) with Juan Miguel Ongsiako; Wawi Navarroza
(Short-listed 2006) with Malu Gamboa; Rodel Tapaya (Short-listed 2005
and 2006) with Mark Villar; Jay Ticar (Short-listed 2006) with Rina Ortiz
and Ronald Ventura (Short-listed 2004, Winner 2006) with Marcel Crespo.
The exhibition also features accompanying written works by the patrons
elucidating their chosen artworks.

In bringing together these partnerships, Art & Society becomes a critical
examination point of the relationships and connections between the ties
of artists and patrons. It also encourages the fostering of a deeper
appreciation of the arts and artists within a personal and wider social
sphere, affirming the significance of the arts in society and humanity.

Art & Society also calls attention to the Ateneo Art Awards, the country's
premier annual contemporary art prize for young Filipino artists. The
Awards are bestowed upon three Filipino visual artists, below the age of
36, who have made an outstanding and significant contribution to the
definition and development of modern and contemporary art based upon a
solo or group exhibition in any public venue held in the past year.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2007 Ateneo Art Awards
up to 31 May 2007, 5 pm. Forms and information may be downloaded at

TWO ELECTIVES: Enjoying Electronics and Innovation & Technology

Enjoying Electronics
A 3-Unit Elective Course (ECE 10.1)

Open to all Loyola Schools students, "Enjoying Electronics" will be managed according to the ECCE department's innovative teaching methodology which received an award in March 2001 from the Dean of the School of Science and Engineering.*1 View three projects, one of which is a "Panda" that follows a sound source.*2 A Paper that describes the methodology.*3

The course will start with a planning session, whose atmosphere will be managed in such a way that the students' "freedom to think" is unleashed and enhanced. The goals set by the students here will become the basis for the design of the experiments that they will "enjoy" doing. Care will be taken that projects lead to the feeling of accomplishment in a successful project. A summary of the behavioral concepts and theories are presented here.*4

A learning environment that will enhance personal and group motivation will take the place of the traditional two-part course scheme of lecture and laboratory.

Innovation and Technology
A 3-Unit Elective Course (CE 195.1), 1st Sem 2007-08

The course is open to all Loyola Schools students, and emphasizes how new ideas radically change our lives.

In this course we develop the thesis that Globalization and the Flatenning of the World lead to very positive forces for Filipino innovators. We study how the world's best innovators today – such as Google and Apple - innovate and how their competition adapt against what are truly disruptive forces. Students will analyze the development of the iPod and how the new iPhone fits within a strategy that will remake Apple and change several industries.

Prof. Greg Tangonan, funded by the prestigious Howard-Hughes Fellowship, obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Physics at CALTECH. An Ateneo Alumnus (BS PHYSICS 1969), he went on to pioneer major developments in photonic technologies as well as optical and wireless communications. He recently retired as Director of HRL Laboratories, which counted Boeing, Raytheon and General Motors as some of the major clients of its innovative technologies. Currently, he is a Professor at the ECCE Department, as well as President and CEO of several technology startup and consulting companies in both the United States and the Philippines .

movements. Topics include the question of writing in the colonizer’s language;

SOSE Summer Updates

Hey Guys/Gals!

It’s Dustin, this year’s Chairperson for the School of Science and Engineering. Although we aren’t complete yet since not all of the representatives have been added, I’d like to Officially Welcome all of the members to the SOSE School Board 2007-2008! J

It has been very quiet the past few months since there have been a lot of things that needed be worked on before we even start the school year. Here are some updates that hopefully will be posted when the procedure for the Ateneo Online Bulletin is already fixed.

The past few months, although has been quiet was very hectic for the SOSE School Board Core (Carlo, Pepi, West, Jez, Tan-Tan, Byron, Caloy (Carlos) and I) since we worked on projects which focused on Social Responsibility and more on Team-Building.

1. Sanggunian Formation Seminar 2007 (@ Sta. Catalina Retreat House in Baguio )
This is what the student council does traditionally every year in order for us to get to know one another and to plan the direction of the Sanggunian in the upcoming year. We do this every year to gather our thoughts together and think of projects that would help us students in our very stressful lives in the Ateneo. We still retained the previous year’s Vision and Mission . We decided to focus on three main aspects which all of our projects will be focusing on (Key Result Areas): Student Involvement, Communication/ Dialogue and Information Dissemination. J

2. SOSE Board’s Form/PlanSem (Formation and Planning Seminar)
This was held in Royal Pines, Tagaytay. This was a 3 Day-2 Nights planning and formation session for the SOSE School Board. Well, I really enjoyed this since besides being able to talk about the upcoming projects this year, we were able to get-to-know each other better via fun activities.

3. Tara Lets! Speed-dating and Dinner with the Orgs
This was held in West’s Pad in Ayala Heights . We invited all the SOSE Orgs and two of their officers so that we can get-to-know (via a Dinner and casual Speed-Dating) them better since we plan on working closer with the Cool Organizations this coming year. We introduced a project entitled, “Sali Na!” This project aims to bring together the efforts of the Organizations and Sanggu together by having joint projects. It means that the Sanggunian will work this year with the brilliant projects/ideas of the organizations and make it big time by opening up the project to all of the SOSE Students. Example: Org1 has this cool tech fair which they do every year however most of its efforts are to promote it only for the Org1’s members. Since this project seems that it will benefit more of our SOSE Students if promotions and marketing efforts are wider, Sanggu will step-in to help with the promotions of this project to a wider audience and marketing efforts will double since we (the student council) will help in marketing for the project. Para bang we make a project bigger to cover a bigger audience!

4. Namfrel QC: Bantay Bilang – Quick Count 2007
This project is currently on-going and will start exactly on May 14, 2007 (Monday) – Next week na! I hope you guys signed up for this since we need a large number of volunteers to help out with the counting of votes from more than a million voters within Quezon City . Since I work as the head of marketing and solicitations, the SOSE School Board will be assisting in the operations for the work that will be done in MVP. Syempre, kasama dun ang food management and distribution. Nyaha! :P In the duration of the count, we will often be in MVP and Faura to assist the volunteers if ever you need any help. I hope that we give our full-force support and effort in the quick count since it’s our own way rin of giving back to the country which we belong to. J Oo nga pala, if you weren’t able to sign-up, you can do walk-ins even on graveyard shifts. (Here are the shifts per day: 12-4 am, 4-8 am, 8-12 nn, 12-4 pm, 4-8 pm and 8-12 mn)

Actually, that’s it muna. There’s a lot of work to be done pa this coming year. Like the SOSE Palooza, we hope that it will push through but we really need your support. By the way, just to refresh you guys on what SOSE Palooza is: It ain’t a kissing event for the SOSE Students. It’s a swap-course project exclusively for SOSE. We want sana each of your course and departments to showcase your best features by conducting activities/ classes that other students from other courses will be interested in. Example: BIO meets MIS – BIO does 3D Modeling and MIS does Dissection. We are still fixing the mechanics for this and we are to present this to you guys when we meet for the plenary. So Stay Tuned! J See you in school! J

GMA News Feature on GABAY HALALAN 101-49

THE DREAM OF AN ENLIGHTENED ELECTORATE IS JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY.

From May 1 up to May 15, 2007, access to unbiased election related information is just five numbers away – 101-49. Anyone can call 101-49 from a PLDT landline anywhere in the Philippines for free, to talk to a tele-educator about the following:

· candidates’ profiles and stand on issues
· party-list information
· information for first time voters
· information on how to get involved in the elections
· where to get election resources from
· inquire about election related legal matters

This service is especially helpful for people who do not have access to the internet, doesn’t understand English or cannot read since a live person will be the one providing callers with the information they need to make an informed vote. Calls will be entertained from 1 May to 11 May, 9:00am to 9:00pm and on May 12 to May 15 the operations will be from 9:00am up to 12 midnight.

Data used for the call center have been gathered from various websites with information provided by the different political parties, and researches conducted by Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB).

This project is called the Gabay-Halalan 10-149. It is spearheaded by Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB) in partnership with Life Academy and PLDT.

ATENEO AND ROYAL NETHERLANDS EMBASSY BRING WORLD’S TOP PHOTO EXHIBIT TO MANILA

The 2007 World Press Photo Exhibition, an annual traveling exhibition showcasing outstanding news photos, will be shown in Manila for three weeks in May in three venues. The show was opened at the Podium Mall last May 2. It is currently at Main Mall Atrium at the Mall of Asia, where it will stay until May 16. From May 18 -24, it will be shown at The Block at SM City North EDSA.

The show, sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University (ACFJ) and the Royal Netherlands Embassy, is a selection of about 200 photographs comprising the winning photos in the annual World Press Photo competition. The competition, the world's largest and most prestigious annual contest in press photography, has been run by the Amsterdam-based World Press Photo Foundation since 1955. This year's competition drew 4,448 photographers from 122 countries, submitting a total 83,044 images of last year's events. An international jury of 13 members screened the entries for 10 award categories such as spot news, environment, sports.

The top award - the World Press Photo of the Year 2006 – was won by Spencer Platt (US) for a photo taken during Israel's bombing of Lebanon last year. Many pictures that have won this top award have become symbols of world history, such as Charlie Cole's 1989 photo of a lone demonstrator confronting a line of tanks on Tiananmen Square and Nick Huynh's 1972 photo of Vietnamese children fleeing a napalm bomb attack.

The annual exhibition is shown each year in about 85 venues in 40 countries, attracting millions of viewers. This year makes the third time the show will come to Manila.

The World Press Photo, an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, was founded in 1955 to foster internationally the work of professional press photographers. In support of the Dutch NGO's work, the Royal Netherlands Embassy is cooperating with the ACFJ to bring the exhibit to Manila. The ACFJ offers courses to working journalists in Asia with the aim of fostering excellence in journalism. It has pioneered in offering journalism education using online distance education methods. Among its latest offerings is a Diploma in Photojournalism.

New titles in politics, society and governance from the Ateneo Press

"Elections for Sale" takes a comprehensive look at the causes and consequences of vote buying. Basing their insights andconclusions on studies done in various countries, the authors systematically explore questions like: What exactly is votebuying? What are its underlying causes? Why does it occur insome places but not in others? How does it affect political andeconomic development? Can it be educated or legislated away? This volume is edited by Frederic Schaffer of the Center for International Studies of the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology.

Father Joaquin Bernas's latest collection of essays showcasinghis wit and sharp intellect revolve around the beleaguered administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The volume, consisting of his selected Living Constitution columns, focus onevents that have transpired during her watch, but the main topicsare about the performance of her office. The collection, called"The Troubled Arroyo Presidency," covers the last few days ofthe Estrada presidency, questions about FPJ's citizenship, the Davide impeachment, foreign relations, the elusive search forpeace, the death penalty, executive privilege, the Abu Sayyaf, charter change, and the ouster movement.

"In the Name of Civil Society" by Eva-Lotta Hedman chronicles thehistory of mobilization in the name of civil society, fromNAMFREL in 1953 to People Power II in 2001. The book examines the notion of civil society not as a set of identifiable actorsor interests, but rather a zone where opposing forces play outagainst each other, and where a powerful bloc seeks to perform adominant role.

"Minimizing Corruption" is the second in a series of PhilippineDemocracy Audit reports by Edna Co, Millard Lim, Melissa Jayme-Lao, and Lilibeth Jovita Juan. It takes stock of theextent to which public institutions and the society at largeaddress the problem of corruption by examining the laws, policies, programs, as well as practice and culture, and examines how citizens deal with or even participate incorruption. In the process the book hopes to contribute to the effort of enlightening society about corruption and its meaningfor democracy.
